Rhodia 4-colors book

Rhodia at Lunalux

With all the time you’re spending this summer relaxing on a park bench, a beach blanket, or your front porch, you probably need someplace to jot down all the fascinating, brilliant and important thoughts passing through your mind.

Consider a Rhodia 4-colors book. At 9×11.5 inches with a spiral binding on the left edge, it has 80 lined pages, perforated for neat removal, divided into four sections by the color bars printed on the edge of the sheets. It’s formatted like a traditional notebook, but with the Rhodia name on the cover and a French pedigree, it’s sure to be a little fancier than the Meads you remember from junior high.

“Lunalux has been preserving the traditions of letterpress printing since 1993. In our Minneapolis studio overlooking Loring Park, we create charming paper goods using vintage letterpress equipment and modern photopolymer technology.”

Rhodia, Ligne Claire and Thundering Typhoons!

La Femme de la Ligne Claire

La Femme de la Ligne Claire

This rosy lady is one of the first from my new Rhodia series of prints, so called because they are all developed from sketches in my new favourite notepad - a Rhodia No.16.

I am tres particular about my materials, even the seemingly unremarkable. You want to use something other than a Staedtler HB and a chewed Bic biro? Psh… And one of my most loved materials has to be continental-style squared paper. Few British stationers carry it, so our French family holidays include choosing very special squared pads for the inevitable Holiday Diaries. I can’t explain the simple joy of writing and sketching on nostalgic gridded paper…

Laundry goes the list

Rhodia laundry list

I was wondering where I had put a Rhodia notebook. Looks like one of ‘em got left in the laundry, and I found little paper-mache-ish bits of it afterward.

Looks like it’s time to restock!

Report: Rhodia pocket notebook

July 18th, 2007 07:07:13

Rhodia pocket notebookI’ve been using Rhodia’s orange pocket notebook, pictured here, for about 2 weeks straight now. I can safely say that after a solid fortnight in my pocket, this little Rhodia is not only a convenience but also a workhorse. It travels in my front pants pocket with my Blackberry, and it currently shows no signs of wear other than some creasing near the top staple (these notebooks are bound with two stables along the spine).

The distinctive orange color helps me keep track of where I left my notebook laying around. The small pocket size isn’t noticeable until you need it, like I did the other day when I was wandering around in Ikea. It beats the bulk of a pocket Moleskine by a mile. The plastic cover holds up well even in sweaty basketball shorts in the middle of a Texas heatwave. That’s something I can’t say for my grubby (kinda dampened) Moleskine cahier.

Garage tale

July 12th, 2007 10:07:07

We wrote about Mark’s Plotastic idea here. Since then, he has redesigned his blog, added a word counter, done interviews, and even put up a poll to which charity the profit proceeds of his first novel will go. All the while keeping to a self-imposed deadline. And all of it from his garage.

I thought folks might like to see just where I’ve been composing this masterpiece, so here are a couple of pictures.

Plotastic workstation

Yes, it’s in the garage.

Here’s the thing: I wake up at 5:00 am every morning to write. My wife and our two kids do NOT enjoy waking up at 5:00 am. And since I’m pounding away on a 1967 Simth-Corona electric typewriter, I need to distance myself (and have a door to close). The farthest away I could get was the garage. So I turned my workbench into a writing desk.

Yeah, it gets a little warm. So I set up the little fan to keep me cool.

The nice part is the door. When I close the door, I close off the world. It’s a nice feature, and I recommend it highly. The typewriter, the door, and the 5:00 am clock-in have all contributed mightily to my progress thus far. We’ll see if I can keep it up.

Rhodia by chance

July 12th, 2007 09:07:20

A forwarded email from one of Exaclair’s customers:

My wife ordered some materials from the Dick Blick Art Supply catalog. Something got fouled up with the order, and we received 3 Rhodia 4.1″ x 5.8″ pads by mistake. It would have cost as much to send the pads back as to keep them, so keep them we did.

I’m an engineer/manager, and my wife is an artist. I don’t think I’ll ever buy another brand of notepad other than Rhodia. The high quality vellum paper is fantastic to make sketches, calculations or notes on, especially with a nice nib fountain pen (smooth and no ink bleed through). Thanks for a great product!

Rhodia at Pencil Things

Rhodia notebooks at Pencil Things
I first discovered this wonderful little orange notebook back in 2003 when I was watching one of my favorite shows, Good Eats. The host, Alton Brown, was writing a grocery list on a Rhodia notepad. It didn’t process with me, until a year later when I attended college at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. There is a WONDERFUL store there called T.I.S. that sells textbooks, college apparel, and office supplies. Yes, a plethora of pens, pencils, and paper.

One shelf had a shoddy little orange display. Though it was in disrepair, the orange-ness and the stylized European look lended itself to hipness and — what immediately attracts me to almost any consumer product — a cult following. That episode of Good Eats sprung into my mind, and I realized: if my hero Alton Brown has one, by gum — I need one too.

Tucker Nichols

July 6th, 2007 07:07:36

Tucker Nichols at workI go through about fifteen small orange Rhodia pads a year. There’s no set order to the pages, I just fill them up with thoughts or road signs or overheard phrases I’d otherwise forget completely. Then when I’m in the studio I can leaf through them and see what’s worth pursuing — and a lot of it is definitely not worth pursuing. I try to be quick when I take down a note because usually I’m quoting something someone I know just said, and that can be kind of awkward.

Rhodia cahier?

July 2nd, 2007 11:07:30

Rhodia cahier

I’m a longtime Moleskine devotee, and I haven’t ever found any brand of notebook that’s as useful for jotting notes on the go. However, when I saw this new type of Rhodia classic stapled notebook, I knew I had to give them a try. Rhodia has eliminated two of my biggest problems with the Moleskine Cahier - the lack of durability in the paper cover (something that wouldn’t have been an issue if they hadn’t discontinued the Volant line) and the size of the pocket version.

View the rest of this entry

The Rhodia “cahier” is part of the new Classic Rhodia Staplebound Notebooks in 3 sizes:

3 x 4.75 inches Graph
6 x 8.25 inches Lined
8.25 x 11.75 inches Lined

Each notebook comes in coated and waterproof card cover, 24 sheets, 80g extra white paper, acid free, pH neutral with smooth finish.
