Rhodia in Paris
November 30th, 2007 12:11:00

This is the Virgin Megastore on the Champs Élysées, the biggest Virgin store in France, where many movies were shot and where each tourist has a visit.
I discovered by chance that they were selling the famous epure Rhodia notebooks I was so looking for. We can find them at the last floor where you also can enjoy a coffee or a dinner at the Virgin Café.

Art Brown Redux
November 28th, 2007 10:11:52

Art Brown is my default go-to store for Rhodia pads and my other stationery needs, such as fountain pen inks. They stock all the styles for not only Rhodia pads, but also Clairefontaine, Moleskine, and other good quality pads.
Instead of going to one store and being disappointed that they don’t have the pad size I want, I can be assured that I will be able to find everything I need at Art Brown. While there, I also get a chance to look at the pretty pens they sell there.
Given a choice, I almost always choose Rhodia pads because I love the color orange.

Rhodia in Colorado
November 27th, 2007 07:11:17

Here in Colorado it is slim pickin’ for Rhodia tablets. My regular store currently is out of stock. Using the retailer locater I found a store that I would have never expected to stock Rhodia paper. To my surprise they actually had a larger supply than my original retailer.
The attached photo simply states that one should stop at the container store for Rhodia tablets. Not the mystic of a local retailer but in my area much more reliable.

A notepad for Thanksgiving
November 25th, 2007 09:11:00

To buy a thanksgiving gift for myself, I went to Sam Flax (Atlanta, GA), and I just got new Rhodia notepad that is my favorite notebook for sketching. I always use Hi-Tec-C 0.3 Black with this notepad. Can’t sketch without…

Rhodia in Seoul, South Korea
November 23rd, 2007 07:11:51

I enclosed a photo and drawing of Apre-midi, a stationary shop and cafe in little French village in Seoul. A place you can get Rhodia pads and pencils while you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea.
Rhodia is very slowly getting popular items among fountain pen users in Korea, but still it is really hard to find the place to sell them. Sorae is little french village in Seoul, probably 300-500 frenches have lived there since 1997. So you can find many wine shops, french bakerys, cheese shops, and french restaurants.
Apres-midi is a cafe but also a shop for stationary. Not many products in display, because it is a cafe. However they do sell Rhodia Pads and pencils. Probably you can easily get a Rhodia via on-line, but while you enjoy a cup of coffee, you can get a Rhodia and get doodles. That’s fun.

The First Thanksgiving
November 22nd, 2007 08:11:28
The first Thanksgiving, painting by Jean Louis Gerome Ferris
In the fall of 1621, 90 Wampanoag Indians and 52 English colonists gathered for a three-day harvest feast. How did Americans get from that celebration to the Thanksgiving ‘traditions’ we observe today? The Christian Science Monitor has this story sometime back.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone!
A Manhattan souvenir
November 21st, 2007 07:11:18
A creative director from Seattle finds in Arthur Brown a souvenir for his Manhattan trip:
I live in Seattle, and I’m sure there are places around here that sell Rhodia pads because several of the artists at my marketing agency have them. But I wanted to visit the (reasonably) famous Art Brown Pen Co. in Manhattan when I was in NYC for a brief visit, and I wanted one of my souvenirs of the visit to the store and the City to be a Rhodia pad (as well as a Lamy Safari fountain pen).
As it turned out, I bought a No. 18 pad and a Rhodia pencil too, and am happy to be using both of them in meetings. As a copywriter and creative director, I need to look at least as cool as the artists I work with, plus I love how the pad handles fountain pen ink!
The experience itself was quite good, and I enjoyed the dilemma of what kind of Rhodia pad to buy as my souvenir. I was leaning toward the gridded pad, and in fact carried one around for a while while I browsed the fountain pen inks, but decided ultimately to get an unlined pad instead. I saw the Rhodia pencil in a box near the checkout, and fortunately grabbed the last one. What a nice bonus!
I know I should find the places nearer home where I can restock when I need new Rhodia pads and pencils, but for now, I like using the one I have as a reminder of my NYC trip. Rhodia: The pads you’ll travel cross-country to buy!

Rhodia at Blick Art Supply in NYC
November 20th, 2007 06:11:51

I am emailing a photo of the Dick Blick Art Supply store on Bond Street in New York city. I go there at least once a month to pick up my Rhodia supplies usually a lined notebook.
I choose this location over more independent stationary stores because…well they accept credit/debit cards without a minimum and I never carry cash. They have a small selection of Rhodia products that seems to move throughout the store each time I go.
To Greg P, who submitted the first entry, you get the surprise prize in addition to the Rhodia giveaway. Woohoo!

Rhodiadrive contest
November 19th, 2007 07:11:37

Submit a photo of a store where you buy your Rhodia stuff. Sorry, no online stores apply. The photo could be a store facade, the store interior, or a window display showing Rhodia products, a picture of yourself with the staff, or the store bag containing the products. Be creative.
The photo/s should be in jpeg format, sent to: rhodiadrive [at] gmail [dot] com. The following info should be included with the photo submission:
- Your full name and email (please indicate if just a nickname should be posted)
- The mailing address of the store (no PO boxes please)
- Description of the photo or tell us about the experience
Each valid submission gets a Rhodia product. We’d like to avoid multiple submissions from a single store, so unless we find your photo particularly appealing, it’s first-submitted, first-accepted per store.
From the entries, we will be selecting two (2) picks of the month as winner of the surprise prizes.
This contest is open to everyone, but only continental US residents will get the automatic entry freebie. International submissions will still qualify for the drawing of the suprise prizes.
Submissions will be published and geotagged at our Flickr group for the benefit of our readers who want to know where to get Rhodia products locally.

Rhodia essential box at Design Within Reach
November 15th, 2007 05:11:25
From brainstorms to “buy milk” everything captured in a Rhodia pad feels a little more special. The key is the paper. Acid-free, extra-white and covered with a grid, it has an exceptionally smooth surface that’s a pleasure to write on with a variety of pens and pencils. Even a fan of fountain pens will not be disappointed. The familiar orange design with two fir trees has remained unchanged since the 1930s and the scored folding cover is a long-time favorite of architects and writers who like how it stays out of their way while they work. The top of each sheet is micro-perforated and the pages that are removed can be stored in the Rhodia box. The set includes a Rhodia Box, four Rhodia pads of various sizes and two Rhodia pencils that are triangulated so they won’t roll away. The paper used in Rhodia pads is made from pulp from FSC certified sustainable forests. Made in France.

Kirigami
November 13th, 2007 12:11:26
Kirigami is a variation of origami where the artist is allowed to make small cuts in the paper (from Japanese “kiru” = to cut, “kami” = paper). This enables the artist to enhance the visual presentation of the artwork, at the expense of simplicity. In origami, papercutting is frowned upon by the majority of modern folders, as techniques have advanced enough to make cutting unecessary for a skilled folder.
Kirigami is usually made when certain folds are made in the paper to make a base, or the model without the cuts in it. Then, cuts are made in the base. When all the cuts are made, the base is opened out and flattened to make the finished kirigami. Usually symmetrical objects are made, such as snowflakes, pentagrams, or orchid blossoms.

There’s a Kirigami web app too, where you can edit wedges by cutting polygons out of it, then showing the results when the paper is unfolded. It lets you create and edit an entire stack of figures, too. Would be neat if you can print it, though.

Rhodia noteboook: better paper than Moleskine (higher quality) or Clairefontaine (less glossy, mostly) — downside: no fixed binding gridded notebooks of any size, at least in my area.
I don’t know why I’m obsessed with these chunky little note pads; I just am.
Orange themed stuff I have on my desk: Rhodia pad, Lamy Safari fountain pen and video iPod.
Rhodia ePure update
November 6th, 2007 07:11:27

This just in. Exaclair, the exclusive US distributor of Rhodia products, will not be importing ePure notebooks in 2008. The US dollar is taking a beating from the Euro, which, imported, would come down to $45 a book.
However, there’s a UK site, The Writing Desk (thanks, Maria!), that sells ePure online, and a closer one I found in Canada, Papeterie Nota Bene (scroll down to the “Boutique Rhodia Notebooks”), which sells them at about US$30 and US$21 for the two sizes. You may call the toll free number at 877 993-2527 or email them at info@nota-bene.ca for more info.

Rhodia spiral books
November 1st, 2007 11:11:11
Rhodia’s waterproof orange covers have long been the notebook of choice for creative types. The French brand’s two new spiral bound options, Meeting and Reverse, are sure to win some followers as well. We’re torn on the whole spiral vs. bound debate (spiral lays flat and flips around while binding slips into a bag easier), so we’re glad to see Rhodia getting in on the game.
