Stellar Girl

Indeed, there is something stellar about this girl. For one, her photography evokes warm and wonderful feelings about childhood, friends and family. She captures with ease those fun, candid moments only a person, whom you’ve established confidence with, can accomplish. And that’s probably a testament to her stellar personality. One Eric Smith wrote that she’s “easily my favorite photographer in Philadelphia.” Another one says, that “she has such a keen eye for getting that perfect moment between friends.” Sure, there may be other photographers, even great ones from the city, where American was born. But she definitely belongs to the category that inspires some “brotherly love.” Our featured lass, who confesses that she’s no Suze Orman when it comes to financial matters, also blogs. In fact this web techie, who once led a team to fix the website at the Wharton School of Business, has been blogging since the Summer of 2000. One of her earliest entries is a one-liner about how she loves jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. Another entry talks about how tired she is of “shushing cats” who hangs outside her window in the middle of the night. Still another talks about conservation, sustainable development and recycling. Meanwhile, in her most recent entry Roz writes about her love for notebooks:

I was in a cute little paper store on Pine Street the other day, looking longingly over the display of Rhodia notebooks, when I exclaimed, “I just LOVE these notebooks!” Another shopper in the store, overhearing my glee, walked over and asked “Why do you love them so much?” Read the entire blog entry here.

When it comes to Erik, there’s no escaping the dreadlocks. Add to that Super Mario on Wii and Alice Coltrane, and you’ll have a package that can only be described as authentic. Peering into his collection of online photos, one can glean that this Sommerville, Massachusetts resident has a passion for, but not limited to, web design. In fact he runs www.gravelroadstudios.com, an outfit that’s also into art, music and opinion. And speaking of music, this Mac fanatic in all likelihood has Lee Scratch Perry and Black Mosettes in his iPod play list. When not busy playing Pokemon Pearl or fixing his Marvel toys, he works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as an administrative assistant at the Biological Engineering Department.

Rhodia Calendar: Rhodia at the 2008 Chicago Pen Show

March 25th, 2008 11:03:52

dsc_0064.JPG

Hey pen collectors from the world over! Rhodia will be at the 2008 Chicago Pen Show. Dubbed as “the old timer” as far as pen shows are concerned, it will be held at the Westin-O’Hare Hotel, right next to O’Hare Airport from May 1 to 4. For serious enthusiasts, this is an excellent chance to get together and trade pens, as well as exchange information on writing as a whole, over pizza (Chicago-style of course!) and soda. One of the biggest hits at the show is the annual auction, featuring the best tools of the trade. This year’s even will also feature Milwaukee’s Susan Wirth, whose pen expertise landed her on the Oprah Show. Of course, check out the Rhodia booth and say “hi” to us. Chicago welcomes you to the “World’s oldest, largest vintage pen show!”

Visit the event website for complete information.

Rhodia now at American Apparel!

American Apparel

By pushing the envelope to the limit, American Apparel established its street creed that can only be described as edgy. Now, this clothing outfit takes another unconventional turn that only the likes of Dov Charney can pull off. We’ve just learned that it’s making Rhodia notebooks available on it’s online store. How the Montreal-born business whiz came up with the idea, we can only surmise. Could it be that he’s a Rhodia guy himself? Or is it Hed Kayce? We’re intrigued. But while we know many would still prefer to buy their notebook in person, and patronize their local bookstore or specialty shop, as if it’s some sort of a pilgrimage, an online presence is always a welcome development, particularly to those who live far from Rhodialand.

That means “cute” in Nipponggo. And yes indeed, Starfield is an embodiment of that cute description. Be it her collection of Montblanc pens to Pilot ink, or her crocs, there’s something delightful about her character. Add posh to the mix as well. You don’t need a translator to recognize her ritzy taste from food (think La Table de Joel Robuchon), to high-tech gadgets in the league of Mac Book Air and iTouch. Gleaning from her Flickr page, it’s also easy to figure out that she loves to travel. Okinawa, here she comes! But be it in the middle of Boston’s Faneuil Hall marketplace, or in LA for a computer graphic expo, Yumi-chan will always be kawaii!

If You Could Read My Mind

penmanship.jpg

It it sad that penmanship is no longer taught in public schools these days, preferring to focus more on keyboarding skills. I wonder, what will these students do when they are confronted with having to sign a contract, write out or endorse a cheque, etc.

If we allow this skill to die off, it will be one more place where European students will be eating the lunch of North American students. In Europe, students are taught penmanship in school, and in many countries, students still use fountain pens, either dip pens or cartridge fill, much as we used to do here.

If the schools are no longer going to teach handwriting or penmanship skills, it will be left up to the parents, or, outside tutoring services to handle this. There are plenty of books out there to use as reference materials to teach your children (or refresh your own skills).

And if we lose this skill, who will be left to learn the art of calligraphy? Electronic isn’t always the solution.

Happy St. Paddy’s!

March 17th, 2008 06:03:01

They say everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. And in Chicago, that could mean literally. Well, almost. Just ask Mayor Rich Daley. This year’s actual celebration falls on a Monday, the 17th of March. But as early as March 9, the whole city was already in a festive mood starting with the South Side parade. It reached its apex on the 15th day of the first month of Spring, with another parade, in downtown Chicago, complete with coloring green of the Chicago River, a custom that can bring a smile to everyone, even St. Patrick himself. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone!

Eclectic. One-of-a-kind. Incisive. These are just some of the distinct characters of Syrup-Tendons‘ artistic pursuit. With keen eyes of a photojournalist, she captures slices of daily living, telling the stories of people through images. One of her favorite jaunts is the New York City subway, where she turns mundane acts of strangers, into intriguing anecdotes of life underground. She’s also fond of graffiti art, weaving a pictorial narrative about this popular sub-culture. Whether she is in the Hamptons, or just home doing her sketches; whether she’s playing with her Nikon F (SLR) or Canon Powershot SD630 (Digital), it can be said that there is no subject she’s interested in, that she can’t turn into an engaging and poetic story.

Eating Cleveland

Mark

Lola

Cleveland may have been in the news this early March weekend, for some record-breaking snowstorm. But there’s a lot more to this city of Rock ‘n’ Roll than meets the eye. And it doesn’t involve meteorology, or LeBron James and the Cavaliers. It’s something to do with a more palatable enterprise called food. Seriously? Seriously. Indeed, Cleveland is creating a buzz as a culinary destination. From its many ethnic restaurants to chic spots in the downtown area’s Warehouse District. Just ask Food and Wine. In fact, chef extaordinaire Michael Ruhlman calls it home. This is also the stronghold of Iron Chef Michael Symon of Lola. To help us navigate the restaurant maze is Mark of EatingCleveland. This self-deprecating and burly gourmand, whose maxim is “Never trust skinny people to recommend good food” can truly dish it. So woe to those who can’t braise their beef, or make their corn tortilla right. He would write, “I like to keep it lively…often using some colorful language to describe my experiences. So, if you read something on the site that offends you, I suggest taking it with a grain of salt. Make that a pinch.” When writing his reviews, he prefers “to write them in notebooks long-hand. It makes me feel more connected to my writing.” Recently, he recalled his futile search for a Rhodia notebook for notetaking, an experience which eventually ended on a more blissful note. We’re curious what he’s writing on his Rhodia now. We look forward to that next review, and actually trying them on our next visit to C-town. Cheers!

Kannur, Kerala, India. The Great Venetian adventurer Marco Polo referred to this place as “a great Emporia of spice trade.” Ibn Batuta, writer and historian of Tangiers, once trudged its shores. Kannur, also known as Cannanore is the hometown of Singapore-based Mohamed Salim. A Salman Rushdie, this McCann World Group strategy planner listens to Pink Floyd, Neil Young and the Radiohead. Known as ez2axs on Flickr, he captured these photographs during a Rhodia Exhibition at Books Actually, an independent bookstore along Telok Ayer Street in the Lion City. Of hisphotostream, he explains: [It] is not essentially about showcasing my photography skills (which is quite basic), but a digital archive of my visual curiosity. We say, his work is “Truth Well Told”.

Celje

Celje

If by stroke of luck or happenstance, you dear Rhodia buffs, happen to wander by Savinja River, where it meets Sava; or find yourself in the midst of the throng of tourists and locals near Stolnica, you are not far from home. You’re either in Celje, or the capital Ljubljana. Welcome to Slovenia, land of the Julian Alps and Union beer, as well as Donald Trump’s latest dame, Melania Knauss. US Senators Tom Harkin of Iowa and George Voinovich of Ohio also trace their maternal roots from this Slavic state. It’s also home to Leonardo, a chain of specialty shops, featuring anything and everything Rhodia. Cool, huh? At the break of Spring, we’ve learned that they’re even doing a new window display in all of their eleven branches. That’s something to watch out for! So feel at home, whether you end up in Koper, frolicking on the coasts of the Adriatic, or in Ptuj admiring the Renaissance and Baroque castles.
