Cleveland may have been in the news this early March weekend, for some record-breaking snowstorm. But there’s a lot more to this city of Rock ‘n’ Roll than meets the eye. And it doesn’t involve meteorology, or LeBron James and the Cavaliers. It’s something to do with a more palatable enterprise called food. Seriously? Seriously. Indeed, Cleveland is creating a buzz as a culinary destination. From its many ethnic restaurants to chic spots in the downtown area’s Warehouse District. Just ask Food and Wine. In fact, chef extaordinaire Michael Ruhlman calls it home. This is also the stronghold of Iron Chef Michael Symon of Lola. To help us navigate the restaurant maze is Mark of EatingCleveland. This self-deprecating and burly gourmand, whose maxim is “Never trust skinny people to recommend good food” can truly dish it. So woe to those who can’t braise their beef, or make their corn tortilla right. He would write, “I like to keep it lively…often using some colorful language to describe my experiences. So, if you read something on the site that offends you, I suggest taking it with a grain of salt. Make that a pinch.” When writing his reviews, he prefers “to write them in notebooks long-hand. It makes me feel more connected to my writing.” Recently, he recalled his futile search for a Rhodia notebook for notetaking, an experience which eventually ended on a more blissful note.
