Off the subject but I'm glad of the new look to the blog. It was withering on the vine, or starting to.

All of the above! The "primary" one is in my current tote--which may be a soft-sided briefcase or a backback depending upon circumstances.

In my bag--at all times! To be without my journal or at least a notebook with available paper...egad. There goes thinking for the day! Usually the bag is a backpack, but I've a field bag that has the ideal flop and character to be a good writing bag.

I've been filling up a pocket notebook in about 90 days for the last year or so. The material is not all that pithy nor is it easy to find but, to keep up that kind of volume, I have it with me always. I have carried a men's shoulder bag for decades (wearing them out in 2-4 years) but recently switched back to Mountainsmith's lumbar-style pack. Rx sunglasses, notebook, two or three FPs, green laser, keys, change, wallet, sometimes a knife, sometimes munchies.

I have my main journal in my backpack at all times. About the only time I find to write in it is the last hour of the workday, after everything is pretty much done. I also keep a messenger bag with a lined journal, an ePure sketchbook, and a few other odds-n-ends handy.

Usually I take a journal along in my purse - though I don't carry a traditional purse. Usually a mini-backpack or small sling bag.
