» New Pen Makers

Are pens and notebooks making a slight comeback? I have noticed that even people who manage most of their calendar and communications by a blackberry, iPhone, or some other kind of electronic devise still like to to carry around a notebook for meetings or to record their ideas, private thoughts and observations. They also carry a pen. Or two.
Along with the surge in notebook interest have come some new pen makers. Three new pen companies I am following are Edison Pen Co. in Ohio; The Goulet Pen Company in Virginia; and the Norsk Workshop in Florida. You can also follow them on Facebook: Brian at The Goulet Pen Company, Patrick at Norsk Workshop and Brian at Edison Pen Co.
I hope to get to meet each of them at a pen show in 2010, where I will leave poorer but much happier!
Do you have a new or favorite pen maker to recommend? Are you considering entering the field?

Smartphones have never been a replacement for a notebook. For a pocket calendar or agenda? Absolutely. Smartphones are not really made for taking meeting notes. Perhaps just grabbing a few key points, but not note-taking.
Will a notebook (paper) replace a laptop? Absolutely not, but it will supplement what can easily be captured on the laptop in a meeting.
I have no doubt that notebooks and pens are making a comeback, but I don’t think there is any correlation between that and someone having a Smartphone or laptop.
If anything GTD (which I don’t personally practice), and the sudden recent obsession with Moleskines have both made notebooks of all kinds sell better. Pens are just the other side of the equation. If anything, fountain pens are definitely becoming more popular as a result.
I am not sure if my wallet could bare another maker. Sailor and Waterman currently own me.
Although Brian does awesome work, I have been tempted by a pearl in blaze orange acrylic. :(
My favorite fountain pen is LAMY 2000. I keep coming back to it because it is a great daily writer and is just awesome. LAMY’s lifetime warranty makes it hard to beat.
The custom fountain pen I’m dreaming of will be a design with Henry Simpole and I expect to use it literally the rest of my life. Show me electronics that will last 5 years anymore – no comparison!
I don’t want the latest “trend” that someone who has nothing in common with me or my life dreams up and markets so it can break and be “out” next year. I want beautiful, long lasting, reliable, USEFUL, and capable of being repaired if necessary. The tools I use literally last centuries with proper care. They’re worth it!
I enjoyed reading your post! Thank you for including my little pen shop!
The timing of this post is too funny! I just bought my very first Rhodia notebook yesterday at “Sign with Prestige” in Fort Collins Colorado where I have been spending the week with family. I have not tried it out yet, but looking forward to putting a little ink to paper.
