That was a great find, Stephanie. There’s some other very interesting pens in that picture too. A dove gray P51 set with gold filled caps, what looks like a Pelikan with a silver overlay, a Conklin lever filler, etc. The second pen on the left looks like a mottled hard rubber pen. Maybe another Conklin. Wish I were there! :-)

God I love antique malls! This is a great find, I love hearing success stories. But I don’t often find restored pens in antique malls that’s for sure!

Ah–the posts says “fifth from the right,” which happens to land on a 51. Fifth from the left must be your pen. The cap is more consistent with what I would expect from a 51 Vac. :)

In any case, $40 is a steal for a restored 51.

I think I was the one hwo told you of the war production thing on twitter. Check out this period ad:

The ad states that 1/10 of the 1944 production was made available for civilian sales–a “few hundred thousand” pens. The whole scope of World War 2 mobilization is amazing.

Restored and gold cap for less than $40–you truly have a find there! Congratulations on a wonderful find!
