August Giveaway: Which Herbin Inks Would You Like To Win?

I’m thinking about giving away some fountain pen inks for the month of August. From J. Herbin’s Jewel of Inks line, there are 30 colors to choose from. Want to help me pick which inks to give away?  Just leave a comment below with your Top 3 color choices and I’ll take it from there.

Don’t own a fountain pen? Try using a brush! These water based inks behave much like watercolor paints.

Star Wars Art

Alberto Lung is a self-taught artist combining a scientific academic background and a passion for manga, anime, archaeology and mythology. “Besides manga and anime, probably the concept art from Star Wars, Transformers, and the Final Fantasy series have been the greatest influence in my artwork,” he said.

I love his sketch of Jedi Master Plo Koon, a member of the Jedi Council. An accomplished starfighter pilot, Plo Koon was a High General of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. He was a close friend of Qui-Gon Jinn, the Jedi who took young Anakin Skywalker (future Darth Vader fame) on as his Padawan learner.

See more of his artwork on his sketchblog, Lung Sketching Scrolls.

Writing in the Moment

Years ago, I worked in a camera shop that had a photofinishing mini-lab on the premises. You could have your film developed in an hour and I would do this from time to time, running over to the store to get pictures developed from an event I just came from and odd as it may sound, I was always a little disappointed with the results. It was as if the memory was so strong in my mind that the pictures couldn’t do them justice. If I waited a while to have them developed, it seemed to bring the memories back and I liked that better. Another Look at Paul Smith Notepads

Christina Villecco is an attorney and consultant who works in fashion merchandizing and related services. She also maintains a style blog, Wearing White After Labor Day.  Here’s what she had to say about Paul Smith Rhodia pads:

“No outfit is complete without the perfect accessories. Whether you’re a fashion addict like me, or someone who occasionally browses the New York Times Style section, the Rhodia notepad is a must-have. I’ve never been a one-size-fits-all kind of girl, so when it comes to my notebooks, there’s no exception. When Rhodia celebrated their 75th anniversary last year by collaborating with English fashion legend Paul Smith, the result was both obvious and irresistible. The iconic orange and black notepads got a facelift with ironic images from the English brand. If you’re wearing a simple white T and jeans kind of dresser, the classics are still a safe bet. But if you have a little edge in your step and prefer to mix stripes and patterns, try out the Paul Smith logo collection for an accessory sure to put the finishing touch on your ensemble.”

Cover your journal?

Do you prefer to cover your journals with an external case? I’m torn…  While I like the idea of having a custom cover, I need to make sure that it doesn’t in any way restrict the way I use the journal. Which many of you may know is balanced on my leg while sitting in a chair. (Flat table space is a scarcity in my home.)

Despicable Me in 3D

Last night, I spontaneously decided to see my first full length feature film in 3D – Despicable Me. My only real experience with 3D was at Universal Studios in Hollywood seeing Terminator II in 3D which was so utterly amazing I still get goosebumps when I think about it. Though the short film was released in 1996, I saw it first in 2001,  then again in 2004 – and I’d see it again right now if given a chance. Continue Readering »

Keeping a Wine Log

Remember our recent post on Project Books? Here’s a great idea- use a small journal to keep track of your favorite wines. I am still a relative newbie to wine, having only jumped on board about five years ago when I had the chance to sample several regional wineries at a local festival. So I’m still kind of learning about the different varietals and whether or not the $4.99 bottles are as good as the $12.99 bottles. Keeping a log not only helps you with what to buy, but also not to buy. That one Chilean Cabernet was cheap & tasty but gave me the world’s worst headache after 2 glasses…

PS – The wine that brought me on board? A local white Sangria which I still buy for special summer occasions.

Happy Monday!

While I know some might be disappointed that the weekend is over, the thing to remember is that each day is as important as the last, as well as the next. Embrace each day for all it’s worth and LIVE every day!

A grapefruit spoon is not a unitasker.

I am a self professed Food Network junkie. I probably have more food shows TiVo’d than anything else. One show I like to watch is Alton Brown’s “Good Eats.” Where he deconstructs, demystifies, and reinvents different ingredients, recipes and techniques. Continue Readering »

Summer Ink Colors

A while back, I asked if you liked to change your ink colors with the seasons and several of you said yes. So now that summer is officially here in the northern hemisphere, I’m wondering what color(s) you have switched to?

Project Books

In our recent post on Basic Colors, Mike Clemens left a comment pertaining to a subject I’d been meaning to talk about: Project Books. When discussing the 4 new colors of the Clairefontaine Basics series, he said: “Colors are perfect for single-purpose notebooks. Keep one for writing ideas, one for shopping lists, etc. and keep them by the keys with a pen clipped on. ” Continue Readering »
