» I want a warrior creature to hold my pencil

Alberto Lung has the largest collection of art supplies  I’ve ever seen. I’m getting to the point where I’m ready to offer him a week’s pay to poke around his collection.

Kidding aside, I take the reviewing of art supplies and writing tools very seriously, and I applaud Alberto for his efforts. When you have a limited budget to buy supplies, or have to order everything online- product reviews are extremely helpful. I myself started writing them when I realized how beneficial other people’s reviews were to me – how they saved me on more than one occasion from making a regrettable  purchase. All things considered, “your mileage may vary” when testing a new ink or pen, but I’d rather read something than nothing about the performance of a product.

And we ALL sincerely appreciate the way so many of you have taken the time to review our products. Your comments provide us with valuable feedback that helps to develop new products, as well as improve on existing ones.

Be sure to visit Alberto’s blog to read his latest review of the Rhodia pencils.

I love the title of this post. . . I, too, enjoy Alberto’s reviews. I have cursed him and the Office Supply Geek more times than I can count as they end up costing money on new tools and supplies I just can’t resist after they review them.

However, I was disappointed that you didn’t discuss the topic of this post as stated in your title.

I love toys on the desk and the inspiration they can often provide, not to mention the smile they bring when in a tough spot or a brain dead moment of thought.

I don’t remember who’s blog I was reading not to long ago but the writer had placed a pen on the tusks of a mammoth as a pen rest. I got a kick out of that one and even went looking for one of my own. I love pachyderms (now an obsolete term for elephants and mammoths.) I have a collection of little “heros” that were once on my office desk. Now I have the little wooden maniquin I call Woody and the larger anatomical models, linked below: http://www.dickblick.com/products/art-s-buck-anatomical-models/

I call them Grayson and Annie. Then there is a Hercules toy, my Capt. Jack Sparrows and lots of misc. other toys that help me when I’m in a rut. Roz over at Roz Wound UP (link in the right sidebar) has some good advise on getting you started on drawing. She recommends pets, etc. I like my toys as I have no pets currently.

I’d love to hear your perspective on these “TOYS” (tools.)

Ah… the toys, er, um.. I mean tools.

I don’t really have desk space to put them. I usually write on my leg – though I do have lots of rocks and crystals throughout my house which I feel give me energy and inspiration. :o)

FYI the warrior creature in question is the Xevoz Razorclaw. One of the first wave of Hasbro building figure kits line that is now sadly discontinued. Some of the conceptual art for this toy line were posted recently by their design team at http://www.dynamodevlabs.com/blog/xevoz/#. They also make for pretty fun drawing reference models.

I have a fair amount of creatures on my desk, and I’ve managed to not lose too many with regards to enhancing desk real-estate!
I’ve got two Sculpey animals stuck on top of my monitor. I have a magnetic tree frog on the side of one of my pencil cups. There’s a skeletal dragon puzzle thing on top of another pen box. And finally some itty bitty carved crystal critters maybe 1/2″ tall hidden among the other detritus.
Now, I also have a poseable wooden iguana, but he wouldn’t be the best for holding pens and is rather prone to toppling over, so he’s in hibernation right now ;)

Gwynne,
That’s the spirit. I’d love to see a pix of the wooden iguana. Can you post a link to snap or a retailer who sells them. Too bad about his toppling problem and sad he has to hibernate in the summer. :>)

I left my wooden iguana in the classroom, but here is the Jerry’s link for it

Thanks, Alberto. Those are really better looking that others I have seen from nearby store.
