» Veterans Day 2011

Veterans Day is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. It is a federal holiday observed on November 11 which marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

Today is expected to be the last Veterans Day of one of the longest military conflicts in our nation’s history, as we welcome home our Iraq war veterans. Dec. 31 marks the the date by which virtually all 39,000 troops left in Iraq have been ordered to return to the United States.

Honor, Integrity, and Sacrifice – we thank you for your service.

Here in South Africa and in many other countries 11 November is celebrated as Remembrance Day but is not a public holiday.

That poster and your words are just beautiful. Thank you.

As in South Africa, we in the UK commemorate Rememberance Day on 11/11 at 11:00 but it is not a Public Holiday. Most of the radio and terrestrial TV channels observe a two-minute silence at that time too. The first Sunday after 11/11 is also Rememberance Sunday when formal services are held at the Cenotaph and at various War Memorials around the country. Due to the operation of the “Pals” system in WWI, most cities, towns and villages with a population over 100 have a War Memorial and so services occur at 11:00 right across the nation.

I think this is true around many nations in the Commonwealth, but I’ll leave it to those citizens to comment on any mistake in my understanding.

Isn’t Rhodia French? What has veterans day to do with note books?

Best regards,

Per Svensson

Hi Per – Rhodia is indeed manufactured in France, though Rhodia Drive is written in America (Pennsylvania to be exact) in support of the US distribution of Rhodia products. As it is an American blog, I chose to honor our nations veterans on veterans day. Hope that clears things up -
