» Pen Test Book
Gentian Osman is one of our favorite calligraphy artists from the blog Drawing with a Squirrel where she can often be found creating the most amazing ink and watercolor art. In this image, Gentian is using the last page of a Rhodia Unlimited pocket book to test a few Hi Tec C Coleto pens.
I myself have kept specific journals to test different kinds of fountain pen inks, and in my various journeys to find the perfect journal have often sacrificed a page or two to see how my different pens would write on any given type of paper. Our friend Brad over at The Pen Addict tests a new pen or pencil almost daily on his blog and makes me feel like I am not alone in this world of wanting to find the ultimate pen/paper/ink writing combo.
Do you like to test different pens/pencils? Do you have one book or tablet where you keep the tests for reference?

I used to keep my various tests (Remember when those stamp markers were all the rage? I had tests of each little stamp!) but I haven’t done anything like that in a long while. I suppose I don’t try enough new pens & pencils anymore; I should rectify that!
I do have a sample notebook, or rather a review notebook which happens to be a Rhodia. That’s where I test all the inks for my blog. But I also have another notebook, a Clairefontaine, which I use for non-structured testing.
Stamp markers?
I don’t usually do that because I rely on other people’s reviews to make my decisions. Besides we all know Rhodia has the best paper for pretty much anything we can throw at it, right? LOL!;)
I use Levenger Circa notebooks filled with mostly Rhodia paper. Thanks to Goulet Pens, I recently stocked up on HP Premium Laser paper – 98 bright, 32lb. It’s amazing with all of my fountain pens and Circa lets me quickly add and remove pages getting rid of the new-notebook-intimidation factor.
I generally test pens and inks in the back pages of whatever notebook I’m carrying, but I’m thinking of making a dedicated ink test book as well. Haven’t picked a book for that purpose yet, but it will have to be white paper.
