Working for yourself, income tax preparation requires additional efforts which I seem to hold off until the very last possible minute. I’ve been trying (but not my hardest) to keep up with things though I somehow don’t think it’s enough to simply cram receipts into an envelope until the 1st week in April.
I may kid, but only a little. I’ve heard of these new fangled accounting softwares on the interwebs but my fear is that even if I choose go that route with the belief that it will make my life easier, I will still be sitting and sweating next year in this same place, same bat channel, holding a pile of receipts and cursing while the software updates…
Last year I set down part of this load by finally hiring a CPA (certified public accountant) to prepare my taxes which seemed to give me more piece of mind than hitting the “submit” button on Turbo Tax ever did.
I feel that I’m a good mix of left/right brain when it comes to balancing the business side of my creative life, so I never really understand what’s up with all this procrastination.
Did you file your taxes yet? Or are you more like me?

Pacioli wrote “Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalità” a 27-page treatise on bookkeeping which was first printed and published in Venice in 1494. It contained the first known published work on that topic, and is said to have laid the foundation for double-entry bookkeeping as it is practiced today.

I used to hire an accountant, after the third year of paying $700 or more to have them do our taxes we did it ourselves. We were very surprised when we found out that he made mistakes each year and now owed the IRS $17,000. Oh did I mention that was the second one in a row to mess up? I am not talking about low quality (so I thought) accountants, these 2 were some of the most recommended is the San Francisco Bay area. I love Turbo Tax.
Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs here in the UK are very generous with time and only start fining us if we haven’t filed by January 31st. It’s much earlier if you’re a small business and want HMRC to work out the tax for you – and trust them to get it right. They are pretty good at it though.
I rely on H&R Block to do my taxes. My husband used to get his done there as a bachelor because he didn’t have time to do them himself (spring football practice is from late March to late April) and we just stuck with that. I could probably do ours on Turbo Tax but I’d rather just not have to worry about it.
I did my taxes myself for years, but finally hired an accountant this year. TurboTax used to work well for me, but my taxes every year have become increasingly more difficult.
