» Creativity Prompt: A list of 20 things

I was recently reading about an interesting mental exercise consisting of rapid image cycling of things that you’d like to have in your life. It reminded me a lot of the creative visualization techniques that I’ve read about in other books where you basically attract the thing you desire by imagining yourself already having it.

You are to create a list of 20 things that you desire, and the caveat is that each item has to be for you and only you. For this exercise to be effective, you must get a little (Ok, a lot) selfish. You also need to be very specific about the things you want and avoid generalities such as good health, money, and happiness. (If  in poor heath you could imagine taking a trip and feeling great, if you need money you might imagine buying yourself something special, and if it’s happiness you desire, you could add to the list a visit to see your best friend who lives in another state.)

I found it extremely challenging to create this list because I tend to be fairly conservative with my wishes and dreams. This is what I finally came up with:

Airstream trailer
Black motorcycle
Train ride through Alaska
Leather library chair & matching sofa
Vacation lake house
Avocado tree
White nectarine tree
Sweet lemon tree
Hiking the Appalachian trail
Farmhouse table
Kitchen nook
In-ground pool
Fire pit
Moonflowers
Eating fresh uni from the shell
Deck with a mountain vista view
Size 12 pants
Vacation in Banff
Learning to draw Kolams (a form of mandala) in India
Dancing all night w/ my friend Becky
California Craftsman Bungalow
Screened porch w/ a ceiling fan

I challenge you to grab a pen and a notebook and create a list of your own 20 (or more) things. See what you might learn about yourself in the process and or how easy it might be to actually make some (or all) of your list items happen in the near future.
