This might sound silly but I think one of the things that helped me to become a better writer was by testing all different kinds of pens, inks, and papers. At the very least, it helped me to become more comfortable with the tools of writing and to never fear the blank page. A good excuse to start making marks on paper is to simply test the pen you are about to write with. Does the pen/pencil glide smoothly across the page? Does the ink flow effortlessly? Is the color of the paper easy on your eyes? Is the ink black enough, blue enough, or red enough? (I just flashed back to my childhood and my mom taking me to the local stationery store. While waiting for her I would test the different pens and pencils on the small white pads they would have on the counters.)
I think when you find even one single tool that you really love, it makes the task that much easier and in some cases, desirable to accomplish.

I like the Rhodia Webnotebooks and Clairefontaine composition books (the one I’ve got still smells like the beach from where I had it in my beach bag this summer), Rhodia pencils, Pentel Energel .7mm pens (purple), Uniball Signo rollerball pens, all of my fountain pens;) and my stationery. So much for one favorite, huh?;)
I am teased by many who know me for my particularity about “writing tools…” I totally agree about testing to find the combination that pleases the hand and spirit…there is a difference, I think, between a pairing that is functional and a pairing that “works.” At the moment, my portable combination is an assortment of Rhodias and a Uniball Jetstream blue 0.5. For home, a Noodler’s Ahab inked with Noodlers blue….and, natch, Rhodia paper. :)
