Once again, it’s that time to take a peek into other people’s bags… When I first joined Flickr, (a social photo sharing site) I had a great deal of fun perusing the “What’s in Your Bag?” photo group. People would neatly lay out the contents of their bags to show off what they carry with them on a day-to-day basis. And not only would they show, they would also tell – adding numerous tagged notes to the images to describe each and every item in the photo. (Click through the links to see the notes) After a while, I had to stop looking because I started to want to go and buy things that other people had.  Like journals…and art supplies… and a new iPod…. new camera… new bag…

Kimberly from the blog Consider the Lilies sent us this photo and it struck me how many images I’ve seen of people enjoying a warm beverage with a Rhodia pad close at hand.

This next image I found in our Rhodia Drive photo sharing group on Flickr from BashaSide7.

I myself tend to enjoy my own hot beverages at home, as is evident from the small sampling of what I have on hand at any given time.

Paper, pen & tunes? To me, that’s like Ready, Set, Go!

We now have over 325 members in our Rhodia Drive Flickr Group and we just love seeing what you do with your Rhodia. Rhodia in the office, in the coffee shop… doodles in your Rhodia and Rhodia in your bag. People have been submitting some excellent shots to the group and now and again I’ve been posting the photo links over on the Rhodia Drive Facebook Page.

I just love the Fruit Loops and the finger puppet in Sara’s picture – but I can’t guess what the puppet is supposed to be. Any guesses? Or maybe it’s not a finger puppet at all…

Flickr member Eric Morgan noted this image as containing his first Rhodia.  Way to go Eric for choosing the Webnotebook!  My own first Rhodia was a No° 11 Bloc pad that I bought at Blick in 2005 after finding that one of my favorite jewelry designers, (Thomas Mann) never went out without one in his back pocket. I can’t say that I ever used it for designing jewelry, but I did use it to store information that I wanted to be able to refer to again and again and the No° 11 was small enough to reside in my bag for several years.  Rhodia fans – which was your first, and when and where did you get it?

“American culture appears to increasingly find masochistic solace in populism veiled as true pluralism, even in the wake of social media advances that allow for more diverse information consumption. We are sadly locked into an economic model that we as consumers have built for ourselves and will require true popular change to unravel, something which we have seen social media do to an extent.” Written like a real social thinker and critic. And he is. Eston Bond is an economics major at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, creator of the upcoming website, Socialuxe. In a sepate site called Hyalineskies, Eston wrote a very incisive essay on social networking, pluralism and trends, as well as the role of the Internet in popular culture. He observed, that “when the aesthetics of social or cultural identity catch on in the mainstream, meaning is lost that ruins the original reason for that aesthetic development, an unintended cost on the true creators of the trend.” Which got us into thinking, where do we belong in the curve?

IN OTHER NEWS…WATCH OUT FOR A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT ON MONDAY!

Pictures tell lot of stories. Behind those images lie the joys, heartaches, excitement, serenity, contentment, awe, boredom, loneliness, love, longing, understanding, comfort, ethusiasm frozen in time as if wanting to jump out of the frame. We may not know much about Zelda クマコ (katana Japanese characters for Kumako, not Kemako as translated earlier), but her Flickr has a lot to tell. We know that she’s a gadget junkie who loves her iPod, PSP, Leica and Motorola Razor cellphone. We also know that she’s fixated with donuts, and everytime she eats them on breakfeast, she needs “at least two.” She’s also a fan of Japanese pop artist, Yoshitomo Nara, a cult-like figure whose work includes manga-inspired rendetion of innocent-looking children. We also know that she likes to hang out at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, “because it’s free.” Of course, judging from her eye for artistic stuff, we’re sure she’s got taste for modern art too. What we don’t know is, who is she missing.

Your Rhodia Driver began to appreciate the art of tea preparation while studying at a university in Tokyo, Japan. It used to be that it was not our cup of tea (pun intended). But that year-long stay in the Land of the Rising Sun, just opened up a new Zen-like experience for us. While there, we noticed how people drink tea, instead of just plain water. And we experienced first hand the art of preparing the drink. So it was a pleasant surprise bumping into ChaHai online. It brought good memories of that awesome year, that would profoundly transform our view of the world.

Cloud8 is the blog of our Flickr Friday featured fotog. When you live in the San Francisco area and work for a tech company in the Silicon Valley area, you’d be in Cloud 8 too. No, not Cloud 9 , because according to Josh, “Cloud 9 doesn’t last long.” Outside of work, Josh is a photography aficionado, and it squares well with his other interest, travel. So far, he’s been to Brazil, Italy, China, India, and as far as New Zealand among other coutries. He even maintains a “white-board on travel” with his friends to track their escapades. We’re curious to know if he records them on his Rhodia as well. Here’s what a friend of his, wrote about him:

“A man of the moment! He is fulfilling a lifetime wish many have aspired but yet lifted a foot to proceed. I am inspired by his actions, be it arduous or exhilarating. Through it all, he remains steadfast on this journey and shares it well. his beautiful images can attest.”

No, it’s not a typo, it’s Mona Leisa. But you might as well borrow a line from a Nat King Cole song to describe her lovely work of art: Quilts. Her blog reads, “Hand Sewn, Hand Drawn, Hand Painted, Handmade.” It feels very homey and comforting, just like the quilts she made.  She and the hubby are currently building their dream house, and in one corner will be her studio. And see that Real Simple magazine cover hanging in her current studio? She writes, “the girl in the picture is basically me. At just about any moment- this is what I would like to be doing! And if I can’t roll up my jeans and dangle my feet into the pond- then I’ll go for my other spot- as a street side artist.”

Award-winning jewelry designer and metal artist, Jon Ryan is the winner of the 2008 Jewelry Artist Magazine’s Jewelry Arts Awards. This University of Iowa graduate has taken the art of metallurgy to the next level with his work that reflects both tradition and what’s in vogue. In his blog, Blue Aluminum, Jon reflects about the daily grind of his profession. We’ve also learned that his been selected as one of the participants of the 5X5X(5) all-media exhibition, this coming December at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia. Kudos to this Rhodia fan!

From Sapporo, Japan we bring you Satomi-chan, a college undergrad who is also a student of the English language. We are truly amazed at how Rhodia has become a cult brand in the Land of the Rising Sun, and Satomi is becoming a part of the movement. And we can only be thrilled.
