Flickr Friday: From Russia with love
Every day, we continue to discover truly amazing and original images online. And we are in awe. Today is no different. Barely few minutes into our regular hunt, we came upon Nikolay Kovalchuk‘s set of images, which include photos of his Rhodia notebook. But what struck us are the photos he had taken during his trips in Russia and abroad. One of those photos is an image of a cat peering through a window. Another is a dog taken next to a monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in Yunnan province, China. Nikolay’s photos are not to be missed.

From the twin city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, we bring you Arktek, yet another Rhodia user, who is an architecture buff and an architectural technology student. This Radiohead fan also maintains a blog of the same name, where he records his musings about things related to his profession…and much more from Bill Moyers to chicken stew. As part of his major, they visit and study some architectural, and through his Flickr page, he captures the images of some iconic structures such as Frank Llloyd Wright’s famous Fallingwater house pictured above. He also has some pictures of new buildings in Winston-Salem. Check it out guys.

Flickr Friday: Aki Oda
If there’s still any doubt that Aki Oda is a fan of the marine species, one only needs to check out the entries of his online spot on Flickr to know the real deal. Browsing through his photo collection, we discovered that this lad devoted a couple of pages on his site to these creatures of the sea, or more accurately, of the aquarium. We’ve had our share of cats and dogs here on RhodiaDrive. So it’s nice to find someone who is into fishes. This Nihonjin (Japanese citizen) also has an even bigger fascination with recording papers and pens, including Rhodia. So check out his collection and see it for yourself.

On first impression, you can sense that there’s something Kafkaesque about Matt’s taste of the things artistic. You only need to look at the paintings and sculptures he chose to highlight on his on-line photo collection, to understand that. From the works of Picasso to Giacometti, they evince complication and often illogical quality. Then you’ll notice his Franz Kafka book, and you’ll fully understand why. When not busy reading the works of the Prague-born novelist, Matt indulges in Robert Desnos’ surrealistic poetry. And that too is prominently displayed in his desk, next to his notebooks and pens. Then, you’ll notice what looks like beer in a plastic cup. That one needs no Kafka to explain.

Flickr Friday: Patrick Ng’s Polaroids and Notebooks
“A person with excellent taste in choosing things that are simple, cool, efficient, and beautiful. An artist in a broad and contemporary sense – his approach to life, his determination towards his work, his drawings, calligraphy, and photography, his affection towards his family, his blog entries… the list goes on and on. And I believe he’s one of the world’s most knowledgeable persons in the field of stationery. I have had the pleasure of meeting him in person, during which we discussed various topics over dinner and drinks (and with much laughter) – from daily life issues to work to travels to religion and to literature. I confirm that Patrick is a great guy, both on- and offline, and I’m honoured to know him.” — Songlines

Flickr Friday: Biffybeans’ Mandala Heaven
According to Mandala Project, the word “mandala” is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. “It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself–a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.” This spiritual symbolism with deep connection to the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, reflects in the many works of Stephanie. Biffybeans, her alter ego, writes, that her mandalas “are generally created out of frustration.” We say, it’s product of artistic inspiration. We may not be able to graple with its meaning, or reach a transcendental plain, but we can certainly appreciate its aesthetic beauty. This “Ex Metalhead turned Artsy Metaphysical Hippie Chick” from the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania is also into vintage cars and fountain pens. We’re also very curious to hear and dance to the rhytm of her drums, because it looks like she’s a major player.

Flickr Friday: Chen the Lomo lover
“Cult following” is an appropriate term you can latch on to describe Rhodia users. That may be the case with Lomography as well. This unique art of taking photos, has inspired so many fans to produce many impressive works. Count in Mister Chen as one of those lomo-lovers. This Taiwanese lomo-natic blogger, has taken a number of images that ranges from colorful and optimistic to dark. From the looks of it, he’s also a notebook collector…and what’s a collection without a Rhodia right? You can appreciate all his works here.

Flickr Friday: Of Rhodia, Zipits and Baby Treeson
What are those little creatures? That’s the first thing that came up to our mind when we stumbled upon Sam’s Flickr page. The other day, we excitedly asked this Rhodia fan if we cold feature him here. We got more than we asked for. Not only did Sam gave us his permission, he opened the door for us to enter into the new world of collectibles! We were particularly curious about “Baby Treeson”, the spiny toy guarding the Rhodia pad. We probed further, and we were also introduced to Zipits and the very cutesy, Wish Come True toy collection featuring Coco, Fluffy Pop, Malfi, Buddy Chub, Popo and Mr. TTT. We absolutely had no idea! Obviously, we need to update our vocabulary. It’s like stumbling into Alice in Wonderland’s toy story edition. But it’s all good because we feel like a kid again!

Flickr Friday: Grannykass

We love Grannykass here at RhodiaDrive. She’s one of the first to join us on Flickr and the very first to subscribe to our YouTube account. But we envy her youthful spirit and vitality. As she fondly says, “Over the Hill and still thinking like a 20 something.” Indeed, Grannykass is a kid at heart. She’s an avid collectors of pens and notebooks. Of course her collection wouldn’t be complete without the trusty Rhodia. She’s also a prolific writer so the pens and notebooks come in handy. As you can see, Grannykass also loves to travel and explore nature. We suspect her adventures keep her “20 something” joie de vivre.

Almost every Friday now, we’ve noticed that we have become fixated with things Japanese. This Friday is not an exception. Although we hesitate to conclude that this will become a regular enterprise. Let’s just say, it’s just a bunch of coincidence. So coincidence it is! We don’t know where the name originates, but we can assure you that our featured Flickr friend, and Rhodia fan ThudButt has nothing to do with body parts. Far from it. ThudButt is our guy from Japan who apparently loves sushi and likes to hang out with his friends. Who doesn’t? His many photos capture so many fun times with friends in his hometown of Japan.

Every time we revisit the Land of the Rising Sun, virtually that is, we are always filled with a sense of nostalgia. It was there where we had our first taste of shabu shabu, our first and so far, only encounter of Sumo wrestlers, and our first snow. This Friday, we return once again to the land that invented karaoke and bento boxes. This time, it’s courtesy of another Nihon-jin, Bizmac, another Rhodia as well as Iphone fanatic who is really fond of taking pictures from all over Japan. Which only makes us wanting for more of things Japanese. As we’re enjoying his photography, we spotted a bunch of sushi pictures. And it only made us hungry at 20 minutes past midnight in Chicago.
On a separate note, we would like to ask you guys to send us more photos of your Rhodia travels. We would really like to keep up with our “Where in the World is my Rhodia?” segment. Paging people from Brazil, or London, or Madrid, or Timbuktu! Wherever you are in the world, please send us your photos with the backdrop featuring the cities you’re in, or the most popular landmark of the place you’re at (Mt. Fuji? The Eiffel? The Grand Canyon?). You can upload it in our Flickr group or email it to us with the corresponding captions. Send it to us, and we’ll feature you on drive, Rhodia Drive. Have a great weekend ahead folks!

We’re writing this dispatch on the road. We’re somewhere in the middle of the Allegheny Mountains in the Midwest trying to get some really well-deserved rest. But we can’t miss our Flickr Friday. Today, we cross the Pacific Ocean once again, and visit one of our favorite destinations: The Land of the Rising Sun. Rhodia fan, Five_One_Seven took these images from his own road trips in his native, Japan. Browsing through his Flickr photos, you’ll know immediately that he loves sneakers and jeans. He also confessed to liking ramen and curry rice. Yum.

A freshly brewed coffee: Exactly what the RhodiaDriver needs to be kicked out of slumber. This was our immediate thought while checking out the photos of Takesi-san, a self-confessed lover of everything coffee and espresso. “I like coffee. Really like coffee,” he writes on his site. We could almost smell the aroma wafting from the images he captured. Our man from Tokyo also maintains Paddyedge, a very sleek site featuring his cafe and his photography, which captures slices of life: From the hustle and bustle of Shinjuku to the serenity of the beach in Kamakura. This J.D. Salinger fan and Rhodia collector also loves his bicycle, which reminds us we should get one, what with the skyrocketing of oil prices. But back to the coffee, we probably need to get a cup already or else we’re gonna fall asleep again, just like what happened last night before we could even update the blog.

Here’s what we know about Architekt2: He is a fan of Rhodia. He has a 2002 BMW dirtbike named Prinz Eugen, and he has been to the Marienburg Castle in Germany. While his photos give us some clue about his interests like collecting stamps and checking out vintage cars, he has essentially remained an enigma. Which only amplifies our curiosity. It’s safe to say, however, that he is an architect (Or is he? Hmm), based on his nomenclature, and his fascination for buildings, ancient and modern alike. One of his favorite quotes sounds like it is coming straight from Nobel Prize-winning Thomas Mann, and actually it is. It reads, “I have always been an admirer. I regard the gift of admiration as indispensable if one is to amount to something; I don’t know where I would be without it.” Well, let’s just say we admire his work.
